What it costs to run in the UK

At the Ofgem price cap rate of 26.32p per kWh, Varmo costs about 16p an hour at full power. Once the room reaches your chosen temperature, the thermostat switches the heater off and on to hold it, so the real cost is usually lower.

Which UK homes Varmo suits

Lounge evenings

Warm the room you sit in, instead of heating the whole house.

Bedroom before bed

Take the chill off, then switch it off before you sleep.

Home office

Stay comfortable at your desk without the central heating on all day.

Flats & renters

No fitting, no landlord permission needed. Just plug in.

Being honest: at 600 W, Varmo is made for one normal-sized room. It's not the right choice for a large open-plan space or to replace your whole central heating.

Will a 600 W heater be enough for my room?

That depends on how quickly the room loses heat. Size matters, but so do ceiling height, windows, insulation, draughts and the temperature outside. A smaller insulated room may be easier to warm than a larger room with cold external walls. No single floor-area promise can account for every UK home, so consider the room rather than relying on a headline.

Varmo is intended for one normal room, not a large open-plan space. Its stated warming time of about 10–15 minutes should be treated as an indication, not a deadline. A room starting very cold can take longer, and some rooms may lose heat faster than 600 W can replace it. If comfort remains poor, reassess the heating needed rather than simply selecting the highest thermostat setting.

Does a ceramic heater produce more heat for the money?

Not compared with another electric resistance heater using the same amount of electricity. Almost all the electrical energy becomes heat in the room. A ceramic plate affects how heat is produced and controlled, but it does not multiply that energy. Terms such as PTC and ThermoLock describe components or controls, not a special source of free warmth.

At full power, a 600 W heater produces less heat per hour than a 2 kW heater. It also uses less electricity during that hour. The useful question is whether the smaller output is enough for the space you occupy. If it is, targeted heating may avoid warming unused areas. If it is not, lower hourly consumption alone does not make the room comfortable or establish that the product is better value.

How quickly will I feel warmth from Varmo?

The ceramic plate reaching full heat in about eight seconds is different from the whole room becoming warm. Air close to the heater can feel warmer before walls, furniture and the far side of the room do. A room with cold surfaces may still feel chilly even when the nearby air temperature has risen.

Give the heater a reasonable chance in a suitable room with external doors and windows closed. Keep necessary ventilation working and do not block air vents to chase a faster result. Try a moderate temperature setting first and judge comfort where you sit, not only beside the display. If the room cannot maintain a comfortable temperature, do not take the quick element warm-up claim as evidence that something must be wrong with your expectations or your home.

Where should I put a plug-in heater in a UK home?

Choose a sound wall socket with open space around the heater and clear airflow. A socket hidden by a sofa, curtain or bedside cabinet is not suitable just because the plug fits. Follow the supplied manual for positioning and required clearances. Do not invent a smaller clearance because the casing is described as cool-touch.

The rotating plug can help with orientation, but it does not make every socket position safe. Check that the heater sits securely and does not strain the socket. Do not use an extension lead, multiway adaptor or travel adaptor to reach a better location. If no suitable socket exists in the room, choose another heating arrangement. Have a loose, damaged or discoloured socket checked by a qualified electrician rather than testing it with a heater.

Can Varmo replace my central heating?

It may provide local warmth while central heating is lower or off, where that is safe and comfortable. It is not designed to maintain the temperature of a whole house. Other rooms still need consideration, including bedrooms, bathrooms and spaces used by someone with health needs. A colder home is not automatically an acceptable trade-off for a smaller bill.

Electricity and gas have different unit prices, while boilers and heating systems have different losses and controls. You cannot compare a heater's wattage with a boiler's maximum rating and call the difference a saving. Compare actual use in your home instead. Keep background heating where needed, monitor how the home feels and seek advice if damp or condensation becomes a problem. Targeted warmth should support a sensible household plan, not replace one.

Is Varmo suitable for older people or renters?

A plug-in format avoids permanent installation, which can be useful in rented accommodation. Even so, renters should report damaged sockets to the landlord and follow any relevant tenancy or building rules. Portable heating is not a reason to leave a faulty fixed heating system unreported. Ask for help if the home cannot be kept adequately warm.

For an older user, check the controls in practice. Can they read the LED display, reach the socket safely and understand the timer? The remote may help, but it cannot inspect the plug or remove something blocking the heater. Someone with reduced mobility, sight or sensation may need extra support. Choose the product around the person's abilities and heating needs rather than assuming a compact heater is automatically the easiest or safest option.

What should I check when the heater arrives?

Inspect the packaging and heater before plugging it in. Look for cracks, loose parts, damaged pins or signs that it has been dropped. Read the manual and check the model and electrical information. If anything looks wrong, keep it unplugged and contact the seller with your order details and clear photographs where useful.

For the first use, stay nearby and check that the heater is secure, airflow is clear and the controls respond as described. A silent-fan description is not a measured noise guarantee, so judge whether the sound suits your room. Stop using the heater if there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell or an unusually hot plug or socket. Do not dismantle it or keep restarting it to see whether a worrying symptom disappears.

Pros and cons

Good points

  • Compact format with touch controls, an LED display and a remote.
  • A thermostat can reduce unnecessary heating once the room reaches its target.
  • No permanent heating installation is needed.

Things to know

  • 600 W may not keep up with heat loss in a cold or draughty room.
  • A suitable, unobstructed wall socket is essential.
  • It is not a whole-home heating replacement.

Who it is not for

We'd rather you buy the right heater than return the wrong one. Varmo is probably not for you if:

  • You need to heat a large open-plan living area.
  • You need guaranteed warmth throughout several rooms.
  • The available socket is behind furniture, curtains or bedding.
